Chairman's Message


The accession of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said in 1970 marked the beginning of a new era of economic and social prosperity for Oman. The country’s natural resources of oil and gas were only discovered in the early 1960's, with the first exports of oil taking place in 1967. The challenges of economic growth and modernisation of the country were formidable in a world which, itself, was experiencing rapid growth in many sectors. Oman reached its economic pinnacle in the mid nineteenth century, followed by a prolonged period of decline, which was the forerunner of today’s sustained and eminently successful Renaissance. The cyclical profile of Oman’s socio-economic history has demonstrated an ability to adapt to the challenges of a changing

world and its economic realities, and the characteristic entrepreunerial skills of the Omani people were re-awakened under the astute and visionary leadership of His Majesty the Sultan.

Private enterprise has played a seminal role in Oman’s development. The Zubair Corporation, founded in 1967 as Muscat Trading Company by my father Mohammad Al Zubair, which then became Zubair Enterprises, was one of a number of leading business houses that operated successfully both nationally and internationally. Its growth in size and diversity, across a wide range of interests, has highlighted the entrepreunerial flair, informed risk-taking and awareness of the national interest that reflects Oman’s successes of the past. The development of the Barr Al Jissah Resort complex for cultural tourists is just one example of fulfilling His Majesty’s vision and the Government’s plans to diversify the economy away from the dominant oil and gas sector.

The Corporation follows international business standards and practices enabling it to achieve the results and targets set by His Majesty the Sultan. It can be justifiably proud of the fact that it is not only one of the largest employers in the country but is fully committed to educating and training Omanis to assume positions of responsibility across the full managerial spectrum. The Zubair Corporation’s broadly based philosophy also encompasses the cultural well-being of the community at large through the support of many social activities, with Bait Al Zubair Foundation being particularly noteworthy in this area.

Good leadership is ineffective without dedicated staff and it is appropriate on the occasion of the Zubair Corporation’s fortieth anniversary for me to express my gratitude for the unswerving loyalty and commitment to Directors, Managers and staff at all levels, past and present, as well as our Bankers, Principals and Partners, who have all made The Zubair Corporation the success it is today.

We are proud as the next generation of the Zubair family to assume the mantle of leadership in a nation that continues to mature as a vibrant open economy. With our commitment guided by our inherited culture and progressive approach, The Zubair Corporation will continue to play its role in the economic, social and cultural development of Oman into the future.
