History of The Zubair Corporation

Sultanate of Oman
Ancient Trading, Modern Progress

The merchants of Oman have been trading for thousands of years, and with the country’s land and sea routes being strategically located, they became famous by reaching the furthest corners of the world with their wares, returning with basic necessities and rich prizes from exotic and unknown kingdoms.

While ancient traders harnessed the monsoon winds to cross vast unexplored oceans and camel caravans overcame the harsh elements of the desert to reach their markets, the Renaissance, led by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, enabled Oman to take its place proudly in the modern world. Today Oman is a land of opportunity that has retained and built on its heritage to become one of the most progressive and stable countries in the Middle East. It is a sophisticated modern state that invites investment and encourages entrepreneurship.

The Zubair Corporation
A Visionary Enterprise

Over its lifetime, the flexibility and dynamism of the Corporation has matched the challenges and opportunities of competing at local and global levels. The Corporation has responded positively to the immediate needs of Oman, which continues to grow under the astute and visionary leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. On an international level, the wide range of new technologies and operating models have reshaped today’s global knowledge-driven economy bringing significant opportunities for The Zubair Corporation.

All people working in the Corporation have contributed to it’s success with dedication and commitment over the decades and the vision and entrepreunerial flair of the Corporation’s founding Chairman, Mohammad Al Zubair, continues the tradition of those great Omani traders of old who established and confirmed Oman’s remarkable prowess as a trading nation in times past.

‘It is only visionaries with conviction and foresight that can tread unknown paths to become the first in any field, but to maintain the position of a leader, even after four decades, shows exceptional wisdom and business acumen, and this is exactly what Mohammad Al Zubair has achieved within The Zubair Corporation.’

The Al Zubair Family
Values and Traditions

The success of The Zubair Corporation is largely due to the vision of Mohammad Al Zubair, who combines the values and traditions instilled in him by his family with his entrepreunerial skills.

Mohammad Al Zubair’s grandfather, Sheikh Ali bin Jumah was a close advisor to Sultan Thuwaini bin Said of Oman, Sultan Bargash bin Said and Sultan Majid bin Said of Zanziba, and used to conduct business for the Sultans in Zanzibar. Sheikh Ali bin Jumah’s grand house in Muscat was on the site where Bait Al Zubair Museum now stands.

Mohammad Al Zubair’s grandfather, Sheikh Ali bin Jumah, was a close advisor to Sultan Thuwaini bin Said of Oman and Sultan Bargash bin Said and Sultan Majid bin Said of Zanzibar, both sons of the renowned Sultan Said bin Sultan (1807-1856), also known as Said the Great. In those times business was conducted on trust and if either of the Sultans needed anything, they would either write or send a message to Sheikh Ali bin Jumah. Transfers of money would go through him in the currency of the day, Marie Theresa dollars and Indian rupees. Sheikh Ali bin Jumah’s grand house in Muscat was the family’s main residence in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Sheikh Al Zubair bin Ali, Mohammad Al Zubair’s father, served under three Sultans and was Al Katib Al Awwal (First Clerk) to His Majesty Sultan Faisal bin Turki. Sheikh Al Zubair was involved in the establishment of the first ice factory in Oman, and the development of an early power company.

Mohammad Al Zubair’s first job was with Petroleum Development Oman, where he worked for five years before establishing Muscat Trading Company. His seven children are the Shareholders of The Zubair Corporation. Initially they all worked in various Divisions of the Corporation before deciding where their specific interests lay.

Today there is still a close connection between the members of the family members, which is one of the great strengths of The Zubair Corporation.’
